Understanding Credits
Safe Appeals Cloud uses a simple credit system—purchase once, use across all AI models, and never worry about expiration.
How Credits Work
Credits are measured in tokens—the basic unit AI models use to process text. A token is roughly 4 characters or ¾ of a word.
Token Examples
This sentence:
"The claimant suffered a work-related injury."
≈ 9 tokens
A typical paragraph:
"The appeal is based on the employer's failure to consider medical evidence..."
≈ 50-100 tokens
What Uses Tokens?
- Your messages — Every message you send uses tokens
- AI responses — The AI's reply uses tokens too
- File context — When you include files with @-mentions, their content uses tokens
- Conversation history — Longer conversations use more tokens as the AI remembers context

Saving Tokens
Here are some tips to make your credits last longer:
Be concise
Clear, focused prompts use fewer tokens and often get better responses.
Use @-mentions selectively
Only include files that are directly relevant to your question.
Start new conversations
Long conversations accumulate context. Start fresh when switching topics.
Use smaller models for simple tasks
Claude Haiku or GPT-4 mini are cheaper for quick questions.
Review before sending
Proofread your message to avoid follow-up corrections.
Pro tip: For simple lookups or definitions, use a smaller model. Save the powerful models (Claude Sonnet, GPT-4) for complex research and drafting tasks.
Checking Your Balance
You can check your credit balance in two places:
- Dashboard — Visit the Safe Appeals Cloud Dashboard to see your current balance and usage history
- In SafeAppeals — Your balance is displayed in the sidebar when using Safe Appeals Cloud
Purchasing More Credits
- Go to the Dashboard
- Click Purchase Credits
- Select your credit pack
- Complete checkout with Stripe
- Credits are added instantly
Credits never expire and can be stacked. Purchase as many packs as you need.
BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)
Prefer to use your own API keys? SafeAppeals fully supports BYOK mode at no cost:
- Open SafeAppeals Settings (
Ctrl+,) - Navigate to Void Settings
- Select your provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google)
- Enter your API key
- You'll be billed directly by the provider
BYOK mode is completely free—you only pay the API provider directly for your usage.
